about heidi oberhelman
I am a combination of self-taught and formally trained. My work is inspired by children, nature, music and experiences shared with my husband and our three children.
My art background began about the time I did. My mother was an artist who enabled me as a child to experiment and hone many skills early on. I can’t ever remember not having a variety of media around me and someone skilled to teach me the techniques. I spent many weekends in the late 60’s and 70’s at art shows, in a VW bus, helping my mother with her pottery and selling a little of my
own work. In addition I
occasionally enrolled in formal private or group lessons. Although I
learned to draw, paint and silkscreen, I enjoyed three dimension media
the most. Silver jewelry was one of my first loves. My transition from high school to Longwood College included a partial tuition art scholarship and eventually, I earned a degree in Art Education and Communication from St. Cloud State University. My teaching certificate for P-12 was earned at Western Kentucky University.
I always tell people that my last teaching job was the most incredible and most rewarding experience anyone could ever have. I was an Art teacher for K through 4 and I went home everyday, convinced I had the very best job in the world. A place where your favorite color really matters, a place that never pre judges you by the kind of day you have had, a place where anyone can be successful, a place where enthusiasm is contagious and where love is unconditional. The children I taught gifted me with the ability to once again look at the world through a child’s eyes and be passionate about the things I love to do.
Because of those very special little people, I have Purple Rabbit Studio. A place where I make what I love to – sterling silver wire jewelry, unique beaded items and more. I prefer to make a one of a kind design and welcome custom orders. All jewelry and accesories are designed and Handmade in America; all handbags are embellished in America.
My work is available in a variety of retail shops throughout the country. Additionally, I participate in gallery shows and art fairs.
